In the midst of sickness around our home this past week and a half, I want to send out this blessings report because it’s true that when you are feeling down, if you’ll just count your many blessing your spirits will go up!
I am naturally a planner–100%. The way I had my life planned out 10 years ago or even 5 years ago isn’t ANYTHING like what is a reality today! Thank God for that! So, this week was planned out by me to be our second week off from school and a week to get my house cleaned up for Christmas. We were also going to make cookies and decorate a gingerbread house. A church nearby was showing a live nativity. There were parades and parties too. What actually happened? Everyone in my house (7 of us) have come down with a flu-like virus lasting several days. This equals to no clean house. Imagine how disgusted I might be. It would be easy to get down about this. We were supposed to host my husband’s family on Christmas Eve for our party, but the house looked like a tornado had struck Mississippi in the middle of December.
But, I’m not down. I’m actually okay. Even if we do have the party, my house is just gonna be how it normally is and not perfectly clean. It’s really cozier and more inviting that way. The best part about these last 9 days have been that my kids and I have foregone chores and activities that we normally would have crammed into our schedule and have spend a TON of quality time together. Old-fashioned kind of fun: sitting in front of the fireplace to get warm, reading lots of books, playing games with dice. This has been a blessing to all of us. My husband has done more dear-hunting than deer-hunting and won many many brownie points, as we call them, attending to our needs while he wasn’t sick. My kids have played together better and not fussed nearly as much. We haven’t gone anywhere or spent any money so we aren’t stressed over money right now. I could go on and on.
The point is that these simple blessings and change of plans has given me gifts that money can’t buy. Even though I wanted to spend the week cleaning our house from floor to ceiling (sounds so fun, right?), God had other plans.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 NIV
Merry CHRISTmas to you all!
